RN Licensure by Examination

Before applying for licensure, please familiarize yourself with the general licensing policies.

 

In order to be eligible for registered nurse licensure by examination, an applicant shall: 

 

Successfully complete a nursing program that meets the requirements outlined in the Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies (RSA):

 

External degree programs are reviewed and approved on an individual basis.  To date, Excelsior College’s   External Degree program has been approved at both the Associate and Baccalaureate levels.

 

Successfully complete the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Licensing Examination-RN (NCLEX-RN);

 

Foreign trained applicants must successfully complete the CGFNS International Certification Program prior to being eligible for examination.

 

Required Documentation

 

The following documentation must be submitted directly to this office from the source:

 

A completed application and fee in the amount of $180.00  Applications are only being accepted online.  Paper applications are not accepted.  Please select this link to apply online;

 

An official transcript of nursing education, verifying the award of a degree, diploma or certificate in nursing;

 

Foreign-trained applicants need only arrange for verification of completion of the International Certification Program to be submitted by CGFNS (a transcript from your nursing school is not required).

 

Examination Registration/Administration

 

Applicants need to register for the examination with Pearson Vue.  Select this link to register online.

 

Please do not submit your Connecticut license application until such time as you are registered for the examination with the testing service.  If you are not registered for examination at the time of submission of your application and transcript, it may delay this office’s approval for you to sit for the examination.

 

Upon receipt in this office of the Connecticut registered nurse licensing application, a transcript verifying completion of nursing school (or verification of CGFNS for foreign trained nurses) this office will deem the applicant eligible for examination electronically. 

 

Applicants who are deemed eligible for examination will receive an Authorization To Test (ATT) letter in the mail or through e-mail that will include information regarding scheduling an examination.  The ATT will be sent directly from the testing service.  Applicants should complete an NCLEX registration form with requisite examination registration fee each examination administration. 

 

Please note examination results are not released by the Department via the telephone.  Results are not official until received in this office.  The Department will mail official results to candidates following routine processing.
