About Us


The Infectious Diseases Section conducts public health surveillance activities to assess incidence and prevalence of infectious diseases, identifies and responds to emerging infections, conducts outbreak investigations, and recommends disease prevention strategies. 

Monitoring and Surveillance: Tracks the incidence and prevalence of infectious diseases through reporting, data collection, and analysis.

Outbreak Investigation: Identifies and responds to outbreaks of infectious diseases, including determining the source and implementing measures to control transmission.

Disease Prevention: Develops and promotes vaccination programs, public education campaigns, and other preventive measures to reduce the incidence of infectious diseases.

Guidelines Development: Establishes policies and guidelines for healthcare providers and the public to manage and prevent infectious diseases.

Collaboration: Works with local and federal health agencies, healthcare providers, and communities to coordinate efforts and share information.

Training: Provides training and resources for healthcare professionals to help improve their response to infectious disease threats.

Foodborne/Waterborne/Enteric Surveillance: monitors and investigates diseases that people can get from contaminated food or water including salmonella, cholera, and E. coli. 
Zoonotic/Vector-borne Surveillance: monitors and investigates diseases that people can get from insects and animals like Lyme Disease, West Nile virus, and rabies. 
Bioterrorism Surveillance: monitors and investigates infectious biological agents that could be used to intentionally cause illness or death.

Active Bacterial Core Surveillance: monitors and investigates invasive disease due to bacterial pathogens including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), group A Streptococcus, and group B Streptococcus
Antimicrobial Resistance (AR): monitors and investigates reports of people with bacterial, viral, fungal infections that are no longer responding to certain antibiotics.
Healthcare Associated Infections: monitors and investigates infections that patients acquire in healthcare settings.

Monitors and investigates diseases that cause illnesses in the respiratory system including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19.

Surveillance: monitors and reports cases of sexually transmitted infections including syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. 
Field Operations: helps people diagnosed with syphilis or HIV connect to medical care, conducts Partner Services, and educates clients.
