AARP and Connecticut Department of Banking Host Fraud Protection Seminar for Seniors

AARP Connecticut and the Connecticut Department of Banking are sponsoring a free “Safe Investing Seminar” on September 24, 2008 to help educate seniors about consumer and investment fraud.

This free half-day event runs from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the Four Points by Sheraton in Meriden. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. with a complimentary continental breakfast.

The program will feature two panels – Protecting Yourself from Fraud and What to Do If You Have Become a Victim.  State and federal securities regulators and local law enforcement, in addition to experts from the Elder Services Bureau of the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney and Connecticut TRIAD, the financial fraud and crime prevention program for seniors, will offer tips on avoiding fraud and detecting scam artists.

“AARP research shows that boomer and older investors are likely targets for so many fraudulent marketing practices,” said Brenda Kelley, AARP Connecticut state director. “This issue is very important to our members,” Kelley said.

“All of us, young and old, should be aware of the risks involved when it comes to investing our hard-earned money.  We should all be leery of promises that seem too good to be true,” said Banking Commissioner Howard F. Pitkin.  “It is important to fully understand the investment and the risks involved.  Also, make sure the seller is properly licensed and has given you written information that fully explains the investment.”

The public – particularly seniors and senior advocates – is encouraged to attend this informative event.  You may register by calling AARP, at 860-548-3167, or ctaarp@aarp.org.  Advance registration is not required.

This event is paid for by the Campaign for Wise and Safe Investing.
