Governor Rell Formally Nominates Howard Pitkin
as Commissioner of the Department of Banking

January 30, 2007

Governor M. Jodi Rell announced today that she is formally nominating Howard Pitkin of Vernon as Commissioner of the Department of Banking. He has been serving in an acting capacity in the agency since September 2006.

“Howard Pitkin is extremely qualified and has extensive knowledge in the field of banking,” Governor Rell said.  “He has dedicated his life to this industry, he fully understands how the department runs and I am quite confident that he will continue to skillfully lead the agency on behalf of Connecticut taxpayers.”

Pitkin began working at the Connecticut Department of Banking in 1977.  He has directed the department’s Banking Examination Division, oversaw regulatory policy and department budgets and handled the department’s daily operations in the Commissioner’s absence.

Named Chief of Administration in 2004, Pitkin successfully restructured the department’s Bank Examination and Credit Union Divisions into a new Financial Institutions Division to improve supervision and achieve cost efficiencies.

The Department of Banking helps to protect users of financial services from unlawful or improper practices by requiring that regulated entities and individuals adhere to the law. It assures the safety and soundness of state chartered banks and credit unions, as well as educating and communicating with the public and other stakeholders about the banking community in Connecticut.
