Commissioner Requests that Banks Close

September 11, 2001  (12:25 p.m.) -

For reasons of security and to exercise caution following apparent terrorist attacks today against a number of locations in the United States, Banking Commissioner John P. Burke has requested that all banks and credit unions immediately cease operations and close for the day. Commissioner Burke has issued this order pursuant to his authority under Connecticut General Statute Section 36a-23(b).

Customers should listen to the radio for further information regarding resumption of normal business activity at their bank or credit union.

While there is no indication that Connecticut sites are at immediate risk, Commissioner Burke has taken this step as a precaution in the hope that bank and credit union employees will take this opportunity to ensure that they are able to travel home safely and ensure that their families are also safe.
