Cottage Food Label Checklist

Read time: 6 minutes

You are required to label your cottage food. The name of the cottage food product must be visible. All capital letters or upper/lower case are both acceptable.

Below is a checklist of items that must be included on your label:

1. Business Information

Business name and address. Address must include the city, state and zip code.

2. Ingredients
List the ingredients in the cottage food product in descending order of predominance by weight. If you use a prepared item in your recipe, you must list the sub ingredients as well.

For example: “soy sauce” is not acceptable, but “soy sauce (wheat, soybeans, salt)” would be acceptable. Learn more about listing ingredients.

3. Net Weight or Net Volume

The net weight or net volume of the cottage food product. This must also include the metric equivalent. To learn more, visit the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Conversion Table.

For example: Net Wt: ___oz / ___g. The largest unit of measurement for net weight should be listed first. For example, 18 ounces should be listed as 1 lb 2 oz.

4. Required Statement

The following statement must be printed in at least 10-point type in a clear and conspicuous manner:

"Made in a Cottage Food Operation that is not Subject to Routine Government Food Safety Inspection.”

Can I write the label by hand?
Handwritten labels are acceptable if they are clearly legible, written with durable, permanent ink, and printed large enough to equal the at least 10-point font.
