Supervised Professional Experience in Connecticut
Before applying for licensure, please familiarize yourself with the general licensing policies.
In order to be eligible for Connecticut speech and language pathologist licensure, an applicant must complete a period of supervised professional experience under the supervision of a Connecticut licensed speech and language pathologist consisting of:
A minimum of 36 weeks and 1,080 hours of full-time employment or a minimum of 48 weeks and 1,440 hours of part-time employment under the supervision of a licensed speech and language pathologist. Full-time employment means a minimum of 30 hours per week and part-time employment means a minimum of 15 hours per week.
Supervision within the SPE must consist of at least 6 sessions of supervision per month for a total of 4 hours; of these 4 hours, at least 2 hours over 2 sessions must include direct, on-site observation by the supervisor of the candidate's performance.

An applicant for approval of a supervised professional experience in Connecticut must have the following documents submitted directly from the source to this office:
A completed application with photograph attached. Applications are only accepted online. Please select the following link to apply online. The application fee is $200.
A master's or doctorate transcript verifying the award of a degree in speech and language pathology;
For purposes of determining eligibility for a supervised professional experience, this office will accept a letter from the applicant's educational program director, on university letterhead, specifying that all academic and fieldwork requirements for graduation have been completed and the date on which the degree will be conferred. A final, official transcript verifying completion of the degree program is required before a license will be issued.
Upon receipt of the application and transcript or program director letter, the Department will notify the applicant in writing regarding the applicant's eligibility for SPE and will provide the applicant with an SPE Approval Form that must be completed and returned directly to this office by the supervisor. The required form may be obtained by selecting this link. Please note that a plan will not be approved prior to receipt of an application and appropriate documentation of completion of education.
Following the completion of the SPE, a report form must be completed by the SPE supervisor evaluating the applicant's performance and be submitted directly to this office. An applicant must receive an evaluation satisfactory to this Department in order to become licensed.
