Embalmer Apprentice Permit Information
After successful completion of an educational program in mortuary science accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFS), an applicant is required to obtain a permit to complete the required apprenticeship training.
In order to qualify for a permit, an applicant must arrange for the submission of the following documents directly to this office from the source:
A completed application form;
An official transcript verifying the award of an associate’s degree in mortuary science;
Applicants earning a diploma (not an associate's degree) in mortuary science from an ABFS program must also arrange for the submission of verification of a baccalaureate degree transcript that documents a minimum of 6 semester hours or 9 trimester hours in the following content areas related to funeral service: business management, accounting, finance, merchandising, business law, computer applications, ethics, counseling, and psychology;
Official report of the successful completion of the Arts and Sciences examinations of the Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards (CFSEB) sent directly to this office;
Upon receipt of the required documentation, a permit will be issued. Please note that the apprenticeship period cannot begin until the Department has issued the permit. During the period of apprenticeship the apprentice must embalm, or assist in the embalming of, at least 50 human bodies. Apprentices are eligible to take the state laws/regulations examination after completion of 6 months of the apprenticeship. Please select this link for the application.
