Loan Servicer Information

What is a Student Loan Servicer?

A Student Loan Servicer is a company or organization that is assigned to assist student borrowers with the billing and other administrative services of student loans.  The company "services" the loan by receiving the scheduled payments from a student loan borrower pursuant to the terms of the loan and applying the payments to a student education loan.

What can servicers help you do?

Servicers can assist borrowers with functions like:

  • Answer questions about your student or parent education loan;
  • Track loans while borrowers are in school;
  • Counsel borrowers on making loan payments affordable and help borrowers apply for repayment options other than the default Standard Repayment Plan;
  • Process requests for deferment or forbearance;
  • Assist borrowers with consolidating loans into a Direct Consolidation Loan;
  • Help borrowers determine if they qualify for loan forgiveness, cancellation or discharge.

Working with servicers
Here are a few tips to keep in mind when it comes to working with loan servicers:
  1. Don't ignore letters from your servicers and notify them of any change of address.
  2. Visit your servicer’s website for contact and other information.
  3. When possible, communicate with your servicer in writing and keep a dated log along with copies of all bills and receipts.
  4. Each loan has its own loan servicer, however, some of your loans may share the same servicer and servicers may change while paying off your loan.
