Shell recovery and “recycling” is a vital tool in maintaining aquatic ecosystems. It’s done by collecting oyster shells from restaurants, processors, and individuals, then repurposing them to rebuild critical oyster habitats.
Leading the recovery process, the Department of Agriculture (DOAG) Bureau of Aquaculture plans to establish a collection system with state restaurants for oyster shells. We will also establish regionalized shell processing/shell cure pile locations for recovered shells.
Once they are cured, the shells will be placed in the approved shell planting locations. These shells will help seed oyster growth and ensure the health and future growth of oysters in Connecticut waters.
