CT DoAg Announces Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program Begins June 1

Supports Families, Seniors, and Local Farmers by Increasing Access to Fresh Connecticut Grown Food

5/28/2026

HARTFORD, CT — Agriculture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt visited the Wethersfield Farmers' Market today, joined by state and town officials, to announce the start of the 2026 Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). The program begins June 1 and helps eligible residents access Connecticut‑grown fruits and vegetables while supporting local farmers and farmers’ markets across the state.

FMNP is supported through state and federal funds providing benefits to eligible seniors, disabled individuals under the age of 60, and WIC participants to buy fresh fruits and vegetables, cut herbs, eggs, and honey (Seniors only) from certified Connecticut Grown farmers.

“Farmers’ markets play a vital role in strengthening Connecticut’s food system,” said Agriculture Commissioner Hurlburt. “They provide farmers more direct access to customers, and programs like FMNP offer residents a way to stretch their food dollars to purchase fresh, local food. The Wethersfield Farmers’ Market is just one of the many markets statewide that offers FMNP, SNAP, and doubling programs to help those dollars go further. This supports the farm economy and ensures that Connecticut Grown farm products are within reach for families and seniors during these challenging times.”

“Access to fresh, nutritious food is not a luxury, it is a foundation of good health,” said Department of Public Health Commissioner Manisha Juthani, M.D. “For too many Connecticut residents, that access isn’t guaranteed. This program changes that by putting fresh, locally grown produce directly into the hands of WIC participants, seniors, and individuals with disabilities who are living on limited incomes. This addresses one of the most fundamental drivers of health outcomes: what we eat. Food insecurity and poor nutrition are at the root of so many of the chronic conditions we work every day to prevent including diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and more. Programs like this one are prevention and health equity in action. On top of that, Connecticut’s hardworking farmers get the recognition and the customers they deserve. The Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program is a win on every front.”

Program Benefits and Participation

In 2026, WIC participants receive $65 each in benefits and eligible seniors receive $40 each. Last year, FMNP served nearly 42,000 WIC participants—more than half of them children—and more than 20,000 seniors and disabled individuals. More than $902,000 in FMNP benefits were redeemed statewide in 2025, more than 50% of that was redeemed by seniors.

Senior program eligibility includes individuals age 60 or older who meet income requirements, as well as disabled individuals under 60 who live in senior housing where congregate meals are provided.

Supporting Farmers and Expanding Market Access

This season includes 207 certified farmers, with additional certifications underway. There are 53 certified farmers’ markets and a growing number of farm stands participating as redemption sites. A total of 156 senior distribution locations will offer benefits this year, with additional locations on a waitlist.

Pop‑up markets at WIC and senior centers will continue, making it easier for participants to redeem benefits. In 2025, 22 farmers took part in pop‑ups, redeeming more than $46,000 in benefits.

Technology Improvements for Farmers and Shoppers

Connecticut continues to expand the electronic FMNP system, which launched in 2023. This year, the state has distributed 19 tablets for farmers to process transactions and 19 mobile hotspots to help markets in rural communities strengthen internet access. Seniors are also encouraged to use mobile apps to help manage and redeem benefits.

How to Access the Program

A full list of farmers’ markets and certified farm stands are available on the CT Grown map. Additional program details including how to become a certified farmer and senior distribution site are available on the CT DoAg website.
