State's Attorney Paul J. Ferencek

Paul J. Ferencek was appointed State's Attorney for the Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk in 2020.

Paul J. Ferencek was appointed by the Criminal Justice Commission as the State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk effective May 1, 2020.

As State’s Attorney, Ferencek is the chief law enforcement officer in the Judicial District of Stamford-Norwalk, which includes the cities of Stamford and Norwalk and the towns of Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Weston, Westport and Wilton. The State’s Attorney oversees the prosecutors and other Division of Criminal Justice staff assigned to the Superior Courts at Stamford and Norwalk, including the Superior Court for Juvenile Matters at Stamford and criminal matters brought to the Housing Session at Norwalk.

Attorney Ferencek is a veteran of nearly 32 years with the Division of Criminal Justice. He joined the Division in 1988 as a Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney in the Appellate Bureau at the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney. He also served in the Geographical Area courts in Derby, Milford and Stamford before transferring to the Part A court in Stamford in 2002.

He is an adjunct professor at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport and is admitted to the New York, U.S. District Court, U.S. Court of Appeals and U.S. Supreme Court bar. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Fordham University in New York and Juris Doctor from the Quinnipiac University School of Law.

The Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk was established effective July 1, 1981, as a result of the passage of Public Act 80-201, which moved the communities that now comprise the judicial district from the Judicial District of Fairfield. State's Attorney Ferencek is the fourth person to serve as State's Attorney for the district. Eugene J. Callahan was the first Stamford/Norwalk State's Attorney, serving from 1981to 2001, followed by David I. Cohen, who served from 2001-2015, and Richard J. Colangelo, Jr., who served from 2015-2020.

Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk

The Office of State's Attorney for the Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk, or the "Part A" office located at the Stamford Superior Court, prosecutes the more serious cases, mostly those crimes classified under state law as class A or class B felony offenses, from all communities in the Judicial District.

The Geographical Area offices, located at the "Part B" Superior Courts in Stamford and Norwalk, primarily prosecute cases involving crimes classified under state law as class C, class D or class E felony offenses as well as all misdemeanor offenses and infractions, including motor vehicle offenses.
