State's Attorney Michael A. Gailor
I assumed the position of State’s Attorney in Middletown in August of 2018. Prior to becoming the State’s Attorney, I served as an Executive Assistant State’s Attorney with the office of the Chief State’s Attorney. As an executive assistant, I oversaw the investigation and prosecution of complex multijurisdictional cases around the state, including those involving violent crimes and political corruption. I also provided training to both prosecutors and the police, worked on legislative matters and handled numerous administrative responsibilities. From 1995-2005, I was an Assistant State’s Attorney in the Judicial District of Hartford where I handled all manner of criminal cases, including those charging murder, sexual assault, assault and robbery. I started in the Division in 1993 as a Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney in the Statewide Prosecution Bureau where I prosecuted cases all over the state. Prior to coming to the Division, I spent one year clerking for the Honorable Flemming T. Norcott on the state Appellate Court and two years clerking for the Honorable Thomas P. Smith, Magistrate Judge, in the United States District Court, District of Connecticut. Between the clerkships, I worked for two years as a staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Hartford, Inc. where I represented indigent individuals who had been convicted of crimes and were seeking redress by way of writ of habeas corpus. In addition to my prosecutorial responsibilities, I am an adjunct faculty member at the University of Connecticut School of Law. Over the years, I have taught legal writing and appellate advocacy at the school. For the past twelve years, I have been the director of the Prosecutor’s Externship program at the School of Law which provides instruction on the ethical obligations and the role of the prosecutor in the criminal justice system and oversees the placement of law students as interns in offices around the state. Currently, I am co-teaching a class at the law school dealing with the prosecution of more complex criminal cases. I currently am on the Division’s legislative and training committees, the DNA Data Bank Oversight Committee, the Evidence Code Committee, the Criminal Justice Information System Legal Committee, the Racial Profiling Prohibition Project Advisory Committee, the Connecticut State Police Major Crime Methodology Program Advisory Board, and was the leader of the Division’s advisory board on the development of the Division’s case management system. I regularly provide training to police officers and fire marshals on a host of legal issues.
I graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1984 and the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1987.
