FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Hartford, CT) – Sharmese L. Walcott, Hartford Judicial District State’s Attorney, today announced that a Superior Court jury on December 18, 2023, found Jermaine Rose, age 34, of Hartford, guilty of the crimes of Assault in the First Degree in violation of Connecticut General Statutes §53a-59(a)(5), Criminal Possession of a Firearm in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-217(a)(1)(A), and Carrying a Pistol Without a Permit in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 29-35(a).
The conviction stems from a March 16, 2020 shooting in Hartford that wounded Mark Thompson, age 45, of Manchester.
Evidence presented at trial showed that on the afternoon of March 16, 2020, police received a 911 call of a shooting with a victim. Officers responded to 25 Wethersfield Avenue in Hartford and found Mr. Thompson, who had been shot. The victim was then transported to Hartford Hospital. Witnesses testified that the victim went to 25 Wethersfield Avenue after receiving a call at work regarding a domestic situation involving children. The victim immediately left work and went to the location of the situation. After speaking to the defendant about the domestic situation, the defendant said to the victim, “Wait 'til I get you alone,” and proceeded to leave the scene before stopping, exiting his vehicle and shooting the victim in the leg. The defendant then fled the scene.
During the trial, multiple law enforcement officers testified, as well as the emergency room physician who treated the victim for a gunshot wound. The jury heard that upon arrival to the hospital, the victim was in “severe” pain, which was a level “10” on the pain scale. At the trial, video evidence presented from surveillance footage corroborated the victim’s testimony that showed the defendant firing a gun at the victim before leaving the scene. Evidence also showed that the defendant is a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing a firearm or obtaining a pistol permit.
This case is being prosecuted by Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Susan Hatfield, with the assistance of Inspector Joseph Buyak, and Paralegal Specialist Kelly De La Cruz. The Honorable Michael J. Gustafson presided over the trial.
Sentencing is scheduled for February 21, 2024 in Hartford Superior Court.
