(New Haven, CT) - John P. Doyle Jr., State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of New Haven, today announced that Kiyon Matheney, age 26, of New Haven, was sentenced on December 12, 2023 by the Honorable Elpedio N. Vitale to 33 years in prison for the fatal shooting of John Tubac-Saquil, age 17, of New Haven, in July 2022.
A New Haven Superior Court jury on October 6, 2023, found Matheney guity of Manslaughter in the First Degree with a Firearm in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53-55a, Carrying a Pistol Without a Permit in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 29-35(a), and Criminal Possession of a Firearm in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-217(a)(1).
According to evidence introduced at trial, the defendant shot Tubac-Saquil shortly after 11 p.m. on July 3, 2022 when the defendant approached the victim’s truck where the victim was talking to his girlfriend. Tubac-Saquil died four days later. An arrest warrant was secured on October 17, 2022, and served two days later on the defendant.
Tubac-Saquil, a recent High School in the Community graduate at the time of his death, planned to start college in the fall of 2022. Several teachers and instructors, as well as Tubac-Saquil’s family, addressed the court at sentencing.
The case was investigated by the New Haven Police Department and was prosecuted by Senior Assistant State’s Attorneys Alexander C. Beck and Charles Johnson, who were assisted by Inspector Alfonso Vazquez.
State’s Attorney Doyle would like to extend his condolences to the Tubac-Saquil family, and his gratitude to the New Haven Police Department for their investigative efforts.
