Jury Convicts New Haven Man of December 2013 Murder

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(New Haven, CT) – Patrick J. Griffin, New Haven State’s Attorney, today announced that a Superior Court jury found Tyhitt Bember, 25, of New Haven, guilty of Felony Murder, Criminal Attempt to commit Robbery in the First Degree and Carrying a Pistol without a Permit related to the homicide of Javier Martinez, then 18 years old and a student at Common Grounds High School in New Haven.

Evidence from the trial, which took place over six days, detailed that Bember approached the victim with a firearm in an attempt to rob him in New Haven on December 28, 2013, and subsequently shot the victim as he attempted to flee.

Bember now faces a maximum of sentence of 85 years in prison. He is scheduled for sentencing before Superior Court Judge Elpedio N. Vitale on February 17, 2022.

The case was prosecuted by Executive Assistant State’s Attorney John P. Doyle, Jr. and Assistant State’s Attorney Melissa R. Holmes.
