Rashod Newton Pleads Guilty to March 2021 Murder of Alessia Mesquita in New Haven

12/01/2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(New Haven, CT) – State’s Attorney John P. Doyle, Jr. announced that Rashod Newton, age 29, of New Haven, pleaded guilty today in New Haven Superior Court to charges of Murder in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-54a, and Assault in the First Degree in violation of Connecticut General Statutes §53a-59.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Newton faces up to 38 years in prison when he is sentenced before the Honorable Gerald L. Harmon on January 26, 2023.

Newton’s plea follows his arrest in connection with a January 23, 2020 shooting in West Haven and the March 22, 2021 murder in New Haven of Alessia Mesquita, age 30, of New Haven, who was fatally shot outside of a parked vehicle. A juvenile was seated in the back seat of the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Supervisory Assistant State’s Attorney Stacey M. Miranda is prosecuting the case. State’s Attorney Doyle wishes to extend his gratitude to the New Haven Police Department for their thorough investigative efforts in this case.
