FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Bridgeport, CT) - Fairfield Judicial District State’s Attorney Joseph T. Corradino announced today that a Superior Court jury found Luiz Roman, 27, guilty of the 2019 murder of Miguel Afzal. Roman was charged with a single count of Murder in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-54a.
Afzal disappeared on November 21, 2019 and his body was recovered in the abandoned Remington Arms building in Bridgeport on December 8, 2019. The medical examiner determined that Afzal died from a gunshot wound and the manner of death was homicide. Roman was arrested in Loraine, Ohio in 2021 and extradited to Connecticut.
“The jury worked hard to reach an appropriate verdict based on the law and the facts,” Corradino said. The jury deliberated about a day following five days of evidence presented by Corradino and Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Justina Moore.
Corradino commended the Bridgeport Police Department homicide squad, the Connecticut State Police canine unit, and the FBI CAST unit for their investigation. “We rely on the experience and professionalism of our law enforcement officers to bring these cases to a close for the victims and the safety of the community,” Corradino said.
Roman faces a maximum prison sentence of 60 years. The Honorable Judge Earl B. Richards III revoked Roman’s two million dollar bond and set sentencing for January 17, 2024.
