Meriden Man Sentenced for 2020 Carjacking, Shooting

9/19/2022

(New Haven, CT) - John P. Doyle, Jr., New Haven State’s Attorney, announced that Josaun Munoz, age 37, of Meriden, was sentenced today by the Honorable Gerald L. Harmon to six years in prison for a carjacking that occurred in Meriden on October 3, 2020, and for an unrelated shooting that occurred on October 3, 2020. The sentence was the result of a plea agreement with the total sentence imposed of 15 years, execution suspended after six years to serve, followed by four years of probation. The court noted that five of the six years that the defendant was ordered to serve are mandatory.

On July 25, 2022, Munoz pleaded guilty in New Haven Superior Court to Robbery in the First Degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-134, for the carjacking, and Attempted Assault in the First Degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-59(a)(1), for the shooting.

An investigation by the Meriden Police Department established that on October 3, 2020 the defendant and several codefendants robbed the victim of her motor vehicle at gunpoint. During the robbery, the victim was struck in the head by one of the assailants.

A further investigation by the Meriden Police Department discovered that on October 3, 2020 the defendant was involved in the exchange of gunfire between two groups of individuals in the parking lot of a Meriden gas station. The police were able to recover video footage establishing that the defendant and another person fired a weapon at an individual.

The case was investigated by the Meriden Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Adrienne Russo.
