FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Stamford, CT) – Paul J. Ferencek, State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk, today announced that on August 8, 2024, Bartosz Kurpiecki, age 34, of Stamford, pleaded guilty in Stamford Superior Court to the following charges contained in two criminal files: Home Invasion, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-100aa; 53a-Threatening in the First Degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-61aa(a)(3); Unlawful Restraint in the First Degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-95; Robbery in the First Degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-134; Larceny in the First Degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53-122; Attempted Home Invasion, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-100aa and § 53a-49; and Assault on a Peace Officer, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-167c.
The defendant, armed with a firearm, broke into the home of an elderly Stamford couple on two occasions in 2020, threatening to shoot the occupants if they tried to contact police. During the first home invasion on November 22, 2020, the defendant cut power and phone lines to the home before breaking in and pointing a gun at the victims while he rummaged through their home. He eventually fled the home with cash, fine china and a Porsche 911 valued at $90,000. Before fleeing, the defendant said if they called police, he would return to their home and kill them. The defendant returned to the Stamford home during the early morning hours of Christmas Day, 2020. Unbeknownst to him, the victims had temporarily moved out of the premises, and had hired off-duty Stamford police officers to monitor the property 24 hours, 7 days per week. Police were dispatched to the home after a motion sensor activated. There, they found the defendant in the rear of the home, trying to break in through sliding doors. After a foot chase through a nearby wooded area and a struggle with police, officers took the defendant into custody. The defendant carried a backpack containing a facsimile firearm, knife, handcuffs, metal pipe, tape, wire cutters, screw drivers, rubber mallet and a flashlight. Also located on his person was a key to the stolen Porsche.
The case was prosecuted by State’s Attorney Ferencek with the assistance of Supervisory Assistant State’s Attorney Michelle Manning.
Under the negotiated plea agreement, which was accepted by the court, the defendant will be sentenced to a combined jail term of 40 years in prison, suspended after 20 years served, followed by five years of probation.
Sentencing is scheduled for October 24, 2024 in Stamford Superior Court following the submission of a presentence investigation report.
