Jury Finds New York Man Guilty of Sexually Assaulting Minor

8/08/2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(New Haven, CT) – John P. Doyle, Jr., New Haven Judicial District State’s Attorney, announced that a Superior Court jury in Meriden today convicted Evans Espinal, age 37, of New York, of two counts of Sexual Assault in the Second Degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-71(a)(1), seven counts of Risk of Injury to a Minor, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53-21, and one count of Sexual Assault in the Fourth Degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-73(a)(1).

Evidence at trial showed the defendant sexually assaulted the victim, age 12, over a two-year period. The Honorable David L. Zagaja presided over the trial.

This matter was investigated by the Meriden Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant State's Attorney Nichol Peco, with assistance from Certified Legal Intern Milo Cortese.

“The New Haven State’s Attorney’s Office is grateful for the investigative efforts of the Meriden Police Department,” State’s Attorney Doyle said. “This office, as shown by the efforts of Assistant State's Attorney Peco, is dedicated to prosecuting and holding accountable those who commit horrific acts against the most vulnerable and victimize our children.”

Sentencing is scheduled for October 16, 2024 in Meriden Superior Court.
