North Haven Woman Charged with Stealing State Adoption Subsidies

5/24/2021

A North Haven woman has been arrested and charged with stealing $41,734.83 in state adoption subsidy payments by filing fraudulent documents.

Geraldine Leak, age 76, of 422 Pool Road, North Haven, was arrested Friday by Inspectors from the Statewide Prosecution Bureau of the Chief State's Attorney's Office on a warrant charging her with Larceny in the First Degree by Defrauding a Public Community.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, from June 2016 until August 2019, Leak received $41,734.83 in subsidies she was not entitled to receive from the state Department of Children and Families. DCF had removed a child from her care on May 31, 2016.

Leak was released on a $20,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court, G.A. No. 14, on June 4, 2021. The charges are merely accusations and she is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Larceny in the First Degree by Defrauding a Public Community is a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000.

The case is being prosecuted by the Statewide Prosecution Bureau. The Bureau is grateful for the assistance it received in this investigation from the Rocky Hill Police Department.
