Division of Criminal Justice Participates in Recent Career Fairs to Boost Prosecutor Recruitment

(Rocky Hill, CT) – The Division of Criminal Justice will participate in two career fairs this week as part of the Division’s enhanced efforts to reach a more diverse talent pool of attorneys and law school graduates both in Connecticut and across the country.
Representatives from the Division of Criminal Justice will attend the University of Connecticut School of Law's 2023 Spring Career Fair today in Hartford in search of qualified candidates for prosecutor positions in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney and in the state’s 13 Judicial Districts.
Prosecutors from the Division also will travel to New Jersey on Saturday for the 2023 Northeast Black Law Student Association (NEBLSA) Convention Job Fair in Atlantic City. The job fair is part of the Association’s 55th Annual Regional Convention which includes panel discussions, award presentations and networking opportunities. The Division’s heightened recruitment strategy promotes greater equity, inclusion and belonging in its efforts to interview candidates for open prosecutor positions.
“Division of Criminal Justice prosecutors are duty-bound to seek justice on behalf of the people of the state of Connecticut, a broad power that must be used wisely and with discretion,” Chief State’s Attorney Patrick J. Griffin said. “The Division is expanding its efforts to further strengthen its workforce with the hiring of dedicated public servants with both the talent and the fortitude to seek the resolution of cases that is consistent with the ends of justice.”
Last month, the Division was one of more than 50 prosecutors’ offices from throughout the United States to participate at the inaugural National District Attorneys Association 2023 Job Fair in Washington D.C. The first-time event was held as prosecutors’ offices nationwide are experiencing staff shortages and challenges recruiting lawyers. The job fair featured guest speakers and offered information sessions on resume writing and interviewing for justice-driven students and attorneys interested in entry-level and lateral positions with potential employers in 25 states.
Middlesex State’s Attorney Michael A. Gailor led Connecticut’s recruitment effort at the recent NDAA job fair.
“Prosecutors have one of the most important jobs in the legal community,” State’s Attorney Gailor said. “As the Connecticut Supreme Court has noted, prosecutors are not just lawyers, they are public servants ‘representing the people of the State, who seek impartial justice for the guilty as much as the innocent.’ To accomplish that objective, they are vested with the authority to charge individuals with crimes. Given the significant role prosecutors play in the criminal justice system and the power they wield, it is the Division’s responsibility to seek out the best and most diverse candidates to fill those positions.”
