Windham Woman Charged with Scamming Public Assistance Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Rocky Hill, CT) – A Windham woman has been arrested and charged with stealing from a program financed by the Connecticut Department of Social Services.

Hannah Sherman, age 33, was arrested today by Inspectors from the Statewide Prosecution Bureau of the Office of the Chief State's Attorney and charged with Larceny in the First Degree in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-122 and False Statement in the Second Degree in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-157b.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Sherman received $2,102 in benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that she was not entitled to receive from August 2023 to November 2023. Court records show Sherman failed to report total accurate earned household income during this time period. Once Sherman’s correct income was factored into the calculation for SNAP benefits, Sherman’s household was not eligible to receive SNAP benefits during that time period.

Sherman was released on a court-set $500 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Danielson, G.A. No. 11, on February 13, 2024.

The charges are merely accusations and Sherman is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Connecticut Department of Social Services investigative division submitted the arrest warrant application for Sherman’s arrest. The case is being prosecuted by the Statewide Prosecution Bureau.
