Torrington Man Sentenced for Organized Retail Theft

1/27/2020

A 39-year-old Torrington man will serve 5 years in prison for a series of thefts from Home Depot stores and other retail outlets throughout Connecticut.

CHRISTOPHER MAIN was arrested for multiple shoplifting incidents at various retailers, including the thefts of more than $29,000 worth of goods from Home Depot stores throughout the state.

Main would conduct these larcenies with other individuals and then provide the stolen items to a “fence” for sale on the internet. Main was charged not only with Larceny but also with Organized Retail Theft, a class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Home Depot Investigations compiled evidence on Main and his associates including internet postings of items for sale and video recordings and photographs of the larcenies. Home Depot then provided the information to local law enforcement, which allowed police to obtain arrest warrants for Main comprising of over 40 larceny cases.

All of the Home Depot larceny cases were charged under one count of Organized Retail Theft.  Main plead guilty to this charge on January 23, 2020, and was sentenced in Meriden Superior Court to 10 years in prison, suspended after 5 years served followed by 3 years of probation. The court ordered the Office of Adult Probation to review Main’s ability to make restitution to Home Depot and other victims of his actions during the course of his probation.

This case was prosecuted by the State’s Attorney’s Office for the Judicial District of New Haven. The total effective sentence reflects the disposition of cases from Torrington, New Haven and New Britain.
