FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Waterbury, CT) – Maureen T. Platt, State’s Attorney for the Waterbury Judicial District, today announced that the Honorable Joseph Schwartz on January 11, 2024 sentenced Michael Mark, age 35, of Waterbury, to 28 years in prison for the 2010 murder of Arnaldo Gonzalez, age 43, in Waterbury.
Evidence in the case showed that on November 2, 2010, the victim was robbed and assaulted by a group of men as he walked to work in Waterbury. The victim had been struck several times in the head with a rock during the assault.
Mark had previously been convicted of the murder of Mr. Gonzalez in 2014 and was sentenced to 48 years in prison but that conviction was reversed and a new trial was ordered.
On October 19, 2023, Mark pleaded guilty in Waterbury Superior Court to a charge of Murder in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-54a.
“Mr. Gonzalez was tragically and senselessly beaten to death over thirteen years ago,” State’s Attorney Platt, who prosecuted the case, said. “The pain of his family has never lessened and they grieve his loss to this day.”
