Judge Sentences Waterbury Man for Evading Responsibility in 2023 Vehicle Crash

(Waterbury, CT) – Maureen T. Platt, State’s Attorney for the Waterbury Judicial District, announced that the Honorable Joseph B. Schwartz today sentenced John M. Egan, age 59, of Waterbury, to 10 years in prison, execution suspended after two years served, for leaving the scene of a vehicle crash in which a teen was seriously injured.

Evidence in the case showed that on May 26, 2023, the defendant was driving a vehicle at the intersection of Highland Avenue and West Main Street in Waterbury that struck a scooter operated by the teen. The defendant then left the scene of the crash. The teen, who attended today’s court hearing with the aid of a wheelchair, suffered serious injuries in the crash and underwent treatment in the hospital for 11 months.

On October 1, 2024, Egan pleaded nolo contendre in Waterbury Superior Court to a charge of Evading Responsibility, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 14-224(b)(1).

“I would like to thank the Waterbury Police Department for their hard work in solving this matter so quickly,” said State’s Attorney Platt, who prosecuted the case. “And I would like to recognize the remarkable courage and determination of the young man, who is still recovering, and his family as they continue to deal with this difficult situation and the catastrophic injuries suffered that day.”
