(Stamford, CT) – Paul J. Ferencek, State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk, today announced that on October 15, 2024, Mynor Romeo Alvarado-Canahui, age 35, of Norwalk, pleaded guilty in Stamford Superior Court to Attempt to Commit Murder, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-54a, Kidnapping in the First Degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-92(a)(2) and § 53a-49(a)(2), Assault in the First Degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-59(a)(1) and Attempt to Commit Sexual Assault in the First Degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-70(a)(1) and § 53a-49(a)(2).
Court records show the defendant struck a 20-year-old woman from behind with his vehicle as she was walking on a remote back country road in New Canaan at about 4 p.m. on May 25, 2020. The impact sent the woman onto the hood of the defendant’s vehicle and her head shattered the windshield. Once the victim hit the pavement, the defendant dragged her along the road and attempted to place her in the backseat of his vehicle. When the woman screamed for help, the defendant put his hand in her mouth. The woman fought back, biting his finger and screaming as he then dragged her down an embankment straddling the Silvermine River. The defendant then held her head underwater and tried to drown her. A married couple and their teenage son, who lived in the area and were returning home from a walk, heard splashing noises coming from the river and observed the defendant standing over the woman and pushing her head into the water. When the witnesses asked the defendant what he was doing, he told them, “We’re OK, we’re just…” before the defendant fled up the embankment and into a nearby wooded area, where he was seen dropping condoms. The woman was able to lift her head out of the water, crawl up the embankment and obtain assistance from the family. Police responding to the scene took the defendant into custody and later obtained a warrant to forensically search the contents of his cellphone. Police discovered numerous web histories/internet searches on the phone which involved rape fantasies and kidnapping.
As a result of the assault, the woman sustained a fractured skull, broken vertebrae and partial permanent hearing loss in one ear. The investigation revealed that the victim did not know the defendant and that he had targeted her at random.
The case was prosecuted by State’s Attorney Ferencek with the assistance of Inspector Martin O’Reilly.
Under the plea agreement, which was offered by the court, the defendant will be sentenced to serve 25 years in prison and will be required to register with the Connecticut Sex Offender Registry for the remainder of his life.
Sentencing is scheduled for February 13, 2025 in Stamford Superior Court.
