(Bridgeport, CT) - Bridgeport Judicial District State’s Attorney Joseph T. Corradino today announced that a Superior Court jury on November 6, 2024 convicted Heyward Curry of multiple offenses arising out of sexual assault on a child from June through August of 2014.
Curry, age 62, of Bridgeport, was convicted of three counts of Sexual Assault in the First Degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-70(a)(2), three counts of Risk of Injury to a Minor, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53-21(a)(2), and three counts of Risk of Injury to a Minor, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53-21(a)(1).
“This office is committed to protecting the youngest and most vulnerable among us from abuse that steals their innocence and causes life-changing trauma,” State’s Attorney Corradino said.
The jury of four men and two women deliberated one day before returning the verdicts. “The jury treated this delicate matter with great respect,” said Senior State’s Attorney Justina Moore, who tried the case for the state. “They worked conscientiously to return verdicts based on the law and the evidence,” she stated.
Corradino praised Moore as well as Inspector Martin Heanue and retired Bridgeport Police Detective Walberto Cotto for bringing the case to a successful conclusion. “We are fortunate to have both experienced investigators and talented prosecutors handling these extremely sensitive cases,” Corradino said.
The state charged the defendant with multiple counts related to the abuse of an 8-year-old child. The child first disclosed these events when he was 12.
Curry faces up to 165 years of incarceration when he is sentenced by Judge Peter A. McShane on January 13, 2025.
