(Rocky Hill, CT) – A Wethersfield woman has been arrested and charged with improperly handling funds she collected in her capacity as a Connecticut state marshal.
Nicole Baker, age 50, of Wethersfield, was arrested on October 13, 2026, by Inspectors from the Statewide Prosecution Bureau of the Chief State’s Attorney’s Office on a warrant charging her with Larceny in the First Degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-122.
A state marshal is a sworn law enforcement officer empowered by statute to serve and execute civil process, including enforcing court-ordered wage and bank executions and collecting funds as directed by the court when judgments are entered against litigants. State marshals operate their own independent businesses and are overseen by the State Marshal Commission within the Department of Administrative Services.
According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Baker improperly handled money she collected as a state marshal from her service of court-ordered wage and bank garnishments between December 2023 and June 2026, when the Commission suspended her employment. Instead of properly disbursing the garnished funds to the judgment creditors as required, she retained those funds, estimated to be about $38,000. The garnishments at issue were issued through the New Britain and Hartford Superior Courts.
Baker was released on a $30,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear in New Britain Superior Court, G.A. No. 15, on October 26, 2026. The charges are merely accusations, and she is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Larceny in the First Degree is a Class B felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $15,000.
The case is being prosecuted by the Statewide Prosecution Bureau.
