(Killingly, CT) – John F. Fahey, State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Windham, announced today that Kyle Carpenter, age 35, of Thompson, has been committed to Whiting Forensic Hospital for a period of 45 years.
On May 1, 2026, Carpenter had been found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect after a court trial in Superior Court in Danielson of charges of Murder, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-54a, and Assault in the Second Degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-60.
After reviewing the evidence and the circumstances of the underlying incident during the commitment phase of the proceedings, a court panel consisting of The Honorable Ernest Green, Jr., The Honorable Cody N. Guarnieri and The Honorable Kevin M. Shay on August 25, 2026 determined that Carpenter will remain under the supervision and care of Whiting Forensic Hospital - a maximum‑security psychiatric facility operated by the State of Connecticut - to ensure both public safety and appropriate treatment.
Carpenter’s commitment follows the investigation and charges stemming from the fatal stabbing of an individual and the assault of another victim on November 13, 2019 at a Thompson residence.
The case was prosecuted by State’s Attorney Fahey and Supervisory Assistant State’s Attorney Robert Mullins, with the assistance of Inspector James Curtis and Paralegal Specialists Janelle Liebla and Margaret Judy-Kirk.
