(New Haven, CT) - New Haven Judicial District State’s Attorney John P. Doyle, Jr. announced that The Honorable Tracey Lee Dayton today sentenced Angelo Gibson, Jr. to serve 28 years in prison, followed by 10 years of special parole, for the December 2022 murder in New Haven of Joshua Vazquez, age 16, of New Haven.
Gibson, age 21, of New Haven, previously pleaded guilty in Superior Court in New Haven to one count of Murder, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-54a.
An investigation showed that on December 19, 2022, in the area of 562 Valley Street in New Haven, the defendant, a passenger in a motor vehicle driven by his mother, Latasha Brown, opened fire on the victim as he crossed the street on a bicycle. The victim suffered a gunshot wound and later succumbed to his injuries.
Brown also was charged in connection with the shooting and later provided the New Haven Police Department with a statement identifying Gibson as the shooter. She was sentenced today to 15 years in prison, suspended after 2 ½ years served, and five years of probation, after she pleaded guilty to one count of Hindering Prosecution, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-166(a), one count of Tampering with Evidence, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-155, and one count of Conspiracy to Tampering with Evidence, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-48/53a-155.
The case was investigated by the New Haven Police Department and was prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant State’s Attorney Melissa R. Holmes and Senor Assistant State’s Attorney Gregory L. Borrelli, who were assisted by Inspector Michael Mastropetre.
State’s Attorney Doyle would like to extend his gratitude to the New Haven Police Department for their investigative efforts, and particularly to Detective Maegan Moran for her work on this case. State’s Attorney Doyle also would like to extend his condolences to the family of Joshua Vazquez.
