Mark White Sentenced for 2008 Cold Case Murder of Jumar Joiner in Hartford

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

6/11/2025

(Rocky Hill, CT) – Chief State’s Attorney Patrick J. Griffin today announced that the Honorable Nuala E. Droney on June 6, 2025 sentenced Mark White, age 47, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, to 40 years in prison with six months of jail credit for the 2008 fatal shooting of Jumar Joiner, age 25, of Windsor, in Hartford.

A Hartford Superior Court jury on March 7, 2025 found White guilty of Murder, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-54a.

According to evidence at trial, on May 3, 2008, police responded to a report of a shooting in the area of West Morningside Street in Hartford. A report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Joiner suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the shooting. In the days, weeks, and months following Joiner’s death, investigators followed up on tips and leads but no arrest was made. In 2017, the Division of Criminal Justice’s Cold Case Unit’s tip line received new leads in the case. That information, including the names of two men who told police they witnessed the shooting, helped result in the March 2022 arrest of White. At the time, White was in the custody of law enforcement authorities in New Mexico on charges of illegal possession of handguns and cocaine.

The case was investigated by now-retired Hartford Police Detective Andrew Jacobson, who was assigned to the Division of Criminal Justice Cold Case Unit at the time, and prosecuted by Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Robin Krawczyk and Executive Assistant State’s Attorney Lisa M. D’Angelo, with the assistance of Supervisory Inspector Michael Sheldon, Inspectors Elisa Tuozzoli, Douglas Jowett, Edwin Rodriguez, Paralegal Specialist Suzanne Colley, Connecticut Department of Correction Officer Kevin Rival and Hartford Police Detective Eric Logan. The Cold Case Unit is grateful to the Hartford State's Attorney's Office for their assistance during the prosecution of this case.
