The Criminal Justice Commission met on Friday, June 16, 2017, to consider the reappointments of six State’s Attorneys; the Deputy Chief State’s Attorney for Operations; and any other business.
The meeting was called to order at 9:15 a.m. by The Honorable Andrew J. McDonald. In attendance: The Honorable Juliett L. Crawford, Attorney Mary M. Galvin, Attorney Eric J. George, Attorney Moy N. Ogilvie, Attorney Erick A. Russell and Chief State’s Attorney Kevin T. Kane. Also present: Ngina McMillian, Human Resources/Equal Employment Opportunity Specialist, and a member of the public.
Chief State’s Attorney Kane administered the oath for Chair of the Criminal Justice Commission to Justice McDonald. Justice McDonald then administered the oath for Member of the Criminal Justice Commission to Attorneys George and Russell.
Attorney Ogilvie made a motion, seconded by Attorney Galvin, to approve the minutes of the meeting of July 1, 2016. The motion passed unanimously.
The Commission interviewed the State’s Attorneys considered for reappointment, as follows: Matthew C. Gedansky, Judicial District of Tolland; and Patrick J. Griffin, Judicial District of New Haven. The Commission recessed at 11:20 a.m. and resumed at 11:30 a.m. to interview: Anne F. Mahoney, Judicial District of Windham; and Michael L. Regan, Judicial District of New London. The Commission recessed at 1:30 p.m. and resumed at 1:40 p.m. to interview David S. Shepack, Judicial District of Litchfield.
Attorney Russell made a motion at 2:28 p.m. to go into executive session to discuss the reappointments of the above-mentioned candidates. The motion was seconded by Attorney Ogilvie and passed unanimously.
Following the executive session, the Commission resumed its public meeting at approximately 2:50 p.m. Judge Crawford excused herself from the meeting due to exigent circumstances.
Attorney Ogilvie moved for the reappointment of State’s Attorney Gedansky; Chief State’s Attorney Kane seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Chief State’s Attorney Kane moved for the reappointment of State’s Attorney Griffin; Attorney George seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Attorney Ogilvie moved for the reappointment of State’s Attorney Mahoney; Attorney Russell seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Chief State’s Attorney Kane moved for the reappointment of State’s Attorney Regan; Attorney Russell seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Attorney George moved for the reappointment of State’s Attorney Shepack; Attorney Ogilvie seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
At approximately 2:55 p.m., the Commission interviewed State’s Attorney John C. Smriga, Judicial District of Fairfield.
After a brief recess at 3:30 p.m., the Commission interviewed Deputy Chief State’s Attorney Leonard C. Boyle. The Chief State’s Attorney is not a member of the Commission for the purpose of appointing the Deputy Chief State’s Attorney, but was present for the interview.
Attorney Russell made a motion at 4:30 p.m. to go into executive session; the motion was seconded by Attorney Ogilvie and passed unanimously.
The Commission resumed its public meeting at approximately 4:36 p.m.
Chief State’s Attorney Kane moved for the reappointment of State’s Attorney Smriga; Attorney Ogilvie seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Justice McDonald moved for the reappointment of Deputy Chief State’s Attorney Boyle; the motion passed unanimously.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:40 p.m.
