New Haven Man Sentenced for July 2019 Sexual Assault

(New Haven, CT) – John P. Doyle, Jr., New Haven State’s Attorney, announced today that Carlos Mejia, age 38, of New Haven, was sentenced on December 12, 2022 to 15 years in prison suspended after 11 years served and 10 years of probation for a July 2019 sexual assault in New Haven. Mejia was sentenced in absentia by the Honorable Jon M. Alander.
Mejia was found guilty by a Superior Court jury in October of Sexual Assault in the First Degree in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-70(a)(1).
According to trial testimony, the female victim, who was 63 years of age at the time, disclosed that her apartment had failed inspection and that the landlord had hired contractors to repair damage within the residence. In order to facilitate entry into the apartment when the victim was not home, a lockbox was installed on the front door of the building. On the evening of July 2, 2019, the victim was asleep in her bedroom and was awakened by noise in her kitchen. The victim proceeded to the kitchen and saw that Mejia had used the key to get inside the apartment. Mejia then followed the victim through the apartment and sexually assaulted her.
Mejia, who was free on a $100,000 professional surety bond during the trial, failed to appear in court for the jury’s verdict. A re-arrest order was issued and bond was set in the amount of $750,000.00.
The case was prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant State’s Attorney Stacey M. Miranda.
