West Hartford Man Charged with Stealing Union Funds

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A West Hartford man was arrested today and charged with stealing more than $17,800 from the American School for the Deaf Dormitory Supervisor’s Union, Local 3949 of AFT-CT, while acting as the union’s treasurer.

Carey L. Mallach, 48, of 113 Cambridge Street, West Hartford, was arrested by Inspectors from the Statewide Prosecution Bureau of the Office of the Chief State's Attorney and charged with one count of Larceny in the Second Degree and two counts of Forgery in the Second Degree, all felonies punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine and up to 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fine, respectively.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Mallach would deposit union funds in the form of check(s), which were generally dues money collected by the American School for the Deaf and paid to the union from members’ paychecks. In the course of depositing these checks, Mallach, as evidenced by the deposit slips, would receive cash back from the teller so that the full amount of the checks were not deposited into the union’s account. Mallach also made cash withdrawals from the checking account through a teller.

Mallach was released on a written promise to appear in Hartford Superior Court, G.A. No. 14, on December 15, 2021. The charges are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The case is being prosecuted by the Statewide Prosecution Bureau.

The Office of the Chief State’s Attorney extends its appreciation to the United States Department of Labor, Office of Labor-Management Standards and the Newington Police Department for their assistance with the investigation.
