Winsted Man Convicted of Drug and Gun Charges

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Torrington, CT) –  David R. Shannon, Litchfield State’s Attorney, announced today that a jury in Litchfield Superior Court on May 18, 2023 found Robert Saxon, age 49, of Winsted and formerly of New York City, guilty of Possession of Narcotics with Intent to Sell in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 21a-278(b)(1)(A), Conspiracy to Sell Narcotics in violation of Connecticut General Statutes §  53a-48(a)/21a-278(b)(1)(A) Criminal Possession of a Pistol or Revolver in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-217c(a)(1) and Criminal Possession of Ammunition in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-217(a)(1). The Honorable Jason M. Lobo presided over the jury trial.

According to evidence introduced at trial, police found Saxon in possession of 19 ounces of uncut heroin, 84 bags of crack cocaine, a large quantity of powder cocaine, a loaded .40 caliber handgun, two high-capacity magazines and more than 300 rounds of .223 caliber ammunition, the type typically used in assault rifles, during a January 2020 raid at a Winsted home.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney Collin Cowdery with assistance from Inspector Mark Puglielli and Paralegal Melissa Brewer. Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney Cowdery, a 2022 graduate of the UConn School of Law, began working for the Division of Criminal Justice in February.

“I am very pleased to see someone recently hired immediately step up to the plate and take on the task of doing a jury trial," State's Attorney Shannon said. "It is crucial that young prosecutors try cases so that their pre-trial offers are reasonable and well-informed. We have excellent training programs for our new hires but ultimately the best training is standing in front of an actual jury and presenting the case.”

Sentencing is scheduled for August 11, 2023 in Litchfield Superior Court.
