Waterbury Woman Charged With Receiving SNAP Benefits Concurrently in Connecticut and Florida

(Rocky Hill, CT) – A Waterbury woman was arrested today and charged with stealing $4,984 from a program financed by the Connecticut Department of Social Services.
Alea Shaw, age 30, was arrested by Inspectors from the Statewide Prosecution Bureau of the Chief State's Attorney's Office on a warrant and charged with Larceny in the First Degree in violation of Connecticut General Statutes §53a-122 and False Statement in the Second Degree in violation of Connecticut General Statutes §53a-157b.
According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Shaw received $4,984 in benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that she was not entitled to receive from September 2022 to January 2023. It is alleged that when Shaw applied for SNAP benefits in Connecticut, she failed to report that she was already receiving SNAP benefits in the state of Florida so for several months she received concurrent SNAP benefits from Connecticut and Florida.
Shaw was released on a $15,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Waterbury Superior Court, G.A. No. 4, on May 23, 2023. The charges are merely accusations and Shaw is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The Connecticut Department of Social Services investigative division submitted the arrest warrant application for Shaw’s arrest. The case is being prosecuted by Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Susan Hatfield of the Statewide Prosecution Bureau.
