Meriden Man Sentenced for Sexual Assault and Risk of Injury Charges

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(New Haven, CT) – John P. Doyle, Jr., New Haven State’s Attorney, announced that the Honorable Courtney M. Chaplin today sentenced Hugo Rosa, age 33, of Meriden, to 20 years in prison, suspended after 7 years served and 10 years of probation, for sexually assaulting a child.

Following a jury trial, Rosa was convicted in Meriden Superior Court on February 14, 2023 of three counts of Risk of Injury to a Minor in violation of Connecticut General Statutes Section § 53-21(a)(1) and two counts of Sexual Assault in the Fourth Degree in violation of Connecticut General Statutes Section § 53a-73a(a) 1A.

According to evidence at trial and court records, police began investigating Rosa after the child’s father reported that the child told him that Rosa had touched her inappropriately on multiple occasions beginning in 2017. Judge Chaplin noted in his sentencing remarks that the child was under the age of 13 and that the crimes occurred on multiple occasions when the victim was sleeping.

Rosa will be subject to lifetime registration as a sexual offender and is required to undergo a period of sexual offender treatment. The judge ordered a lifetime standing criminal protective order against Rosa for the protection of the victim.

The case was investigated by the Meriden Police Department and was prosecuted by Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Nichol Peco, with assistance from certified legal intern Aimee Nicolich.
