Jury Convicts New Haven Man of Attempted Sexual Assault, Burglary Charges

(New Haven, CT) - John P. Doyle Jr., New Haven State’s Attorney, announced that a jury today in New Haven Superior Court found Larry Makins, age 35, of New Haven, guilty of the crimes of Attempted Sexual Assault in the First Degree in violation of Connecticut General Statutes Sections § 53a-49 (a)(2) and § 53a-70(a)(1) and Burglary in the First Degree in violation of Connecticut General Statutes Section § 53a-101(a)(3). The Honorable Elpedio N. Vitale presided over the jury trial.
According to evidence introduced at trial, Makins broke into an apartment in New Haven on April 10, 2019, and attempted to sexually assault the resident who was sleeping at the time. The victim fought off the attacker, exited the apartment and ran to a neighbor for help. Police used written medication prescriptions Makins had dropped inside the apartment at the time of the attack and DNA evidence to link him to the crime.
The case was investigated by the New Haven Police Department and was prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant State’s Attorney Stacey M. Miranda, who was assisted by Inspectors Alfonso Vazquez and Peter Lavelle.
Sentencing is scheduled for June 27, 2023 in New Haven Superior Court.
