FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(New Haven, CT) – State’s Attorney John P. Doyle, Jr. announced today that the Honorable Gerald L. Harmon sentenced Rashod Newton on January 26, 2023 to 35 years in prison for the 2021 murder of Alessia Mesquita in New Haven.
Newton pleaded guilty in New Haven Superior Court to charges of Murder in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-54a and Assault in the First Degree in violation of Connecticut General Statutes §53a-59.
Newton’s plea followed his arrest in connection with a January 23, 2020 shooting in West Haven and the March 22, 2021 murder in New Haven of Alessia Mesquita, age 30, of New Haven, who was fatally shot outside of a parked vehicle. A juvenile was seated in the back seat of the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
Supervisory Assistant State’s Attorney Stacey M. Miranda prosecuted the case with assistance from Inspector Alfonso Vazquez. State’s Attorney Doyle wishes to express his sincere condolences to the family of Mesquita and extend his gratitude to the New Haven Police Department for their thorough investigative efforts in this case.
