Statement of Chief State's Attorney Kevin T. Kane
Chief State's Attorney Kevin T. Kane issued the following statement today in response to the decision of the Connecticut Supreme Court in State of Connecticut v. Russell Peeler:
I appreciate having been granted the opportunity to present the state’s position on all of the issues the present Court raised about Connecticut’s death penalty. The Court has now spoken and, as always, we respect its decision. As such, we will move forward to re-sentence the individuals currently on death row to a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of release.
The Division of Criminal Justice and I extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the victims of these crimes and to their families. I also wish to express my appreciation to the dedicated professionals in the Division of Criminal Justice who have devoted so much of themselves throughout this process.
