Endorsement Bilingual

Certification Requirements: Bilingual

Bilingual endorsements are specific to the subject and grade level to be taught and require that you also meet coursework requirements for the non-bilingual endorsement to be eligible for the bilingual endorsement. There are no bilingual endorsements for special education or special subjects.

1) Hold a valid certificate endorsed for early childhood, elementary, middle school subject area, or secondary subject area.

2) Complete 18 semester hours of credit, through one regionally accredited college or university, including course work in each of the following:

  • first and second language acquisition including language and literacy development;
  • linguistic and academic assessment;
  • cross cultural sensitivity and communication and implications for instruction
  • strategies for modifying English content area instruction;
  • methods of teaching English as a second language;
  • methods of teaching bilingual education;

3) Demonstrate written proficiency in English:

  • Obtain a passing score on Praxis CORE writing 

OR

  • Hold a degree from a regionally accredited institution where the language of instruction was English

 

4) Demonstrate oral and written proficiency in the world language of the bilingual program:

  • Obtain passing scores on ACTFL OPI and WPT in the non-English language

OR

  • Document a degree from a regionally accredited institution or the equivalent where the language of instruction was the non-English language sought. 

 

NOTE:

  • Bilingual Humanities (991) requires 15 credits in humanities (English, social studies, history, world language)
  • Bilingual STEM (992) requires 15 credits in STEM (science, math, engineering, computers, tech ed)
