Connecticut Launches Statewide Electric Vehicle Charging Program

Resources available to help customers access program benefits

(New Britain, CTFebruary 21, 2022) – Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) today announces the launch of a webinar series, in partnership with the state’s electric utilities, as well as additional resources to support the rollout of the statewide Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Program.

Available to all residential and commercial customers of Eversource Energy (Eversource) and The United Illuminating Company (UI), the EV Charging Program is designed to facilitate the deployment and integration of EV infrastructure across the state, focusing on equity and inclusion.

Through the EV Charging Program, residential customers are eligible for several categories of rebates: up to $500 for a new, eligible Level 2 “smart” charger; and up to $500 for associated home wiring upgrades, if needed. Residential customers are also eligible for additional performance incentives paid out over time for participating in a managed charging program, up to $200 annually. Residents who previously installed a Level 2 Charger or equipment that does not meet program eligibility requirements may still be eligible for an $100 upfront incentive for enrolling in the ongoing managed charging program.

Additional measures and incentives are available for multi-unit dwellings, commercial and industrial customers, and public fast charging stations.

Eversource and UI will host the following webinars to provide program details and answer questions from residents and key stakeholder groups regarding how to access the program’s benefits:

“The launch of
the statewide EV Charging Program comes at a pivotal time in the transition to electrified transportation solutions, and it is critically important that we ensure customers understand and can access the benefits the program provides,” said
PURA Chairman Marissa P. Gillett. “We hope that anyone potentially interested in operating an electric vehicle in this state – whether as an individual, municipality, or business – has the opportunity to join one of these upcoming webinars to learn more about the incentives available through this program.”

"I am beyond excited that UI will be working with PURA and our industry partners to provide more electric vehicle charging stations across the state, especially in areas of need,” said UI CEO and President Frank Reynolds. “More and more of our customers are using electric vehicles, and this program is the right step to lead Connecticut to a clean energy future."

“Partnering with PURA and other key industry leaders to help the state shift to a clean transportation economy by making EV ownership more feasible for drivers in Connecticut is exciting and a huge win for everyone,” said Eversource Vice President of Energy Efficiency Tilak Subrahmanian. “To inspire participation in the program, we’re using multiple channels including webinars and digital advertising as well as working closely with external partners like contractors, EV charger manufacturers and dealerships to share information about the technology and rebates available with a broad audience. By expanding the use of EV’s this program will naturally help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance cleaner transportation in the state.”

PURA established the EV Charging Program in July 2021 as part of the Authority’s Equitable Modern Grid initiative. The Authority approved the inaugural program design in December.
