Summary: | The record keeping system (CRMVS) in the criminal courts will be updated to properly identify drug convictions that invoke the federal firearms prohibition, and to support the more timely and accurate dissemination of the information to NICS and DPS CCH. The work activities summarized below will improve the court record keeping systems and procedures for disseminating the records to NICS and DPS CCH: (1) Assess the court record keeping procedures for drug convictions; (2) 2. Develop a computer module for handling drug convictions; (3) Reprogram the Judicial Branch’s firearms reporting system to accommodate drug conviction records; (4) Reprogram the CRMVS to provide more accurate and complete drug conviction records to the DPS CCH; (5) To the extent that resources are available, assess the record keeping and NICS reporting procedures for other types of adjudications for unlawful drug use, and develop procedures for making these other types of records available to NICS.

Protection Order Registry Enhancements
Summary: | In 2002, the Judicial Branch implemented a registry (POR) for protection orders issued in stalking and domestic violence cases in all criminal and civil courts. The registry automatically transmits the protection order records to the national protection order file (NCIC) and the state firearms regulatory database (DPS) on the same day that an order is issued or modified by the court. The work activities for this project are summarized here: (1) Assess and modify current protection order procedures to ensure that all records are being entered into NCIC and provided to state and federal firearms regulatory authorities; (2) Reconcile and validate protection orders in NCIC and DPS; (3) Reprogram POR to accommodate protection orders received by the Judicial Branch from foreign jurisdictions; (4) Reprogram POR to facilitate the service of process in foreign jurisdictions for CT orders, and to accommodate service of process information in such cases; ( 5) Reprogram POR to receive data from electronic filing systems used in civil restraining order cases; (6) Reprogram POR to transmit protection order records to NICS.
