Hospital payment plans

Read time: 6 minutes

What do I do if I can’t pay my entire medical bill right now?

Contact the hospital or healthcare provider’s billing office and request a payment plan. Many providers will negotiate a monthly payment amount with you so you can pay your balance over time.

Always ask about a hospital’s financial assistance policy before you receive services if you are concerned that your bill will be more than you can afford.  You may qualify for a sliding fee scale or other assistance.  You can find the hospital’s financial assistance policy on their website and it should also be posted in the patient registration office.  If you don’t see it, ask the staff where you can find it and how you can apply.
