What should I do if I have questions about my medical bill?
Contact your healthcare provider’s billing office directly with questions about your bill. You can find the billing office contact information on your billing statement or on your provider’s website. If you speak with the billing office and still have questions, you have more options.
You have the right to get a detailed bill for any care you get at a hospital. Be sure to ask for a detailed list of every service and fee included in your bill. Request the specific billing code and financial charge for each item. You can ask questions about each item if something seems incorrect to you.
You may want to compare your medical bill to the explanation of benefits you receive from your insurance carrier. It may be difficult to tell which services or fees your insurance covered specifically.
You can contact your insurance carrier directly and ask a representative to review your itemized medical bill with you. The insurance carrier will be able to determine if the charges were allowable based on their contract with your healthcare provider. They will also be able to tell you if any of the charges were discounted based on their agreement, and what they covered and help you understand your co-pay or deductible responsibility.
You can reach your insurance carrier through the customer service number provided on your card or through their website.
