Applicants not Board Certified

 
An applicant for a license as a genetic counselor may, in lieu of board certification, qualify for license provided the applicant has, prior to October 1, 2015:
 
Acquired eight years of experience in the practice of genetic counseling;
 
Earned, from an accredited institution of higher education, a master's or doctoral degree in genetics or a related field; and
 
Attended a continuing education program approved by the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) within the five-year period prior to the date of application.
 
Documentation Requirements
 
Applicants must arrange for the following documentation to be submitted directly from the source:

A letter from the appropriate authority documenting at least eight (8) years of experience in the practice of genetic counseling.  Appropriate authority includes, but is not limited to, a human resources official, practice manager or other individual authorized to verify employment.  The letter must indicate the dates of employment and confirm that the applicant was employed as a genetic counselor;
 
A transcript submitted directly from the shool verifying the award of a master's or doctoral degree in genetics or a related field;
 
Verification of completion of the continuing education as outlined above;
 
If applicable, verification of all states where the applicant is licensed, current or expired.
