Monthly Counts of Births and Deaths
The Office of Vital Records at the Connecticut Department of Public Health maintains statewide registries of vital events (births, fetal deaths, deaths and marriages) which have occurred in CT or to residents of CT. Data collected through the vital records registries are analyzed annually to create statistical reports on the number of events and associated demographic and health information. In CT, these vital statistics reports are known as Registration Reports.
To request a birth, death, or marriage record for personal or legal reasons, visit How to Obtain a Record on the Vital Record's Office page.
Annual Registration Reports and Methods1:
Vital Statistics/Registration Reports provide comprehensive statistics related to the number of events by town and county of residence or occurrence, demographics such as age or race/ethnicity, risk factors, health outcomes, and rates and prevalence of select health indicators. These reports provide the official state rates for several key public health indicators, including infant mortality, low birthweight and preterm birth, fertility, and leading causes of death.

1 Birth data for 2016 to present are collected using the 2003 revision of the U.S. Standard Certificate of Live Birth and for 1992-2015 were collected using the 1989 revision of the U.S. Standard Certificate of Live Birth.
Death data for 2005-present are collected using the 2003 revision of the U.S. Standard Certificate of Death and for 1992-2004 were collected using the 1989 revision of the U.S. Standard Certificate of Death.
Fetal Death data for 2018 to present are collected using the 2003 revision of the U.S. Standard Certificate of Fetal Death and for 1992-2017 were collected using the 1989 revision of the U.S. Standard Certificate of Live Birth.
2 On January 1, 2016, Connecticut transitioned from the 1989 revision of the U.S. Standard Certificate of Live Birth to the 2003 revision of the U.S. Standard Certificate of Live Birth. Adoption of the most current version of the U.S. Standard Certificate of Live Birth allows Connecticut to collect modernized health and medical information through the birth registry that is consistent with the rest of the Nation. As a result of changes in the birth information collected using the 2003 Revision, some birth-related statistical tables published annually in the Registration Reports were no longer valid. The Department of Public Health has subsequently updated the birth-related statistics in the 2016+ annual reports to reflect the birth data as it is collected now using the 2003 Revision. The revision process was also used as an opportunity to implement a number of additional changes to the annual reports to support ongoing public health surveillance of births, deaths, fetal deaths, and infant deaths. Of particular note is the addition of time series data for birth rates by geography. These modernizations have changed the structure of the tables within the report. Connecticut adopted the 2003 Revision of the U.S. Standard Certificate of Death in 2005 and continues to collect death data using that certificate.
