CT Grown Strawberries Make Their Sweet Return

Nine tips to help you enjoy the season: from picking and storing to finding farms near you

6/01/2026

(HARTFORD, CT) – The Connecticut Department of Agriculture (CT DoAg) today announced that CT Grown strawberries are beginning to arrive at farm stands and farmers’ markets across the state, marking the start of one of the most anticipated harvests of the year. Early‑season varieties are now available, and pick‑your‑own fields are expected to open statewide in the coming days.

“Connecticut farms work hard to bring these first berries of the season to our communities and now is the time to enjoy them,” said Agriculture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt. “Visiting a farm to pick-your-own or buying a quart at a farm stand or market gives you the freshest berries while directly supporting local farmers in your community."

Strawberry season in Connecticut is short but especially sweet, with peak picking typically lasting only a few weeks. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead and support local farms throughout the season.

To help ensure a safe and enjoyable pick‑your‑own experience, CT DoAg offers the following reminders:

  • Check the farm’s website or call‑ahead line for daily picking conditions and updates.
  • Make reservations in advance if required, as fields can fill quickly during peak times.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and proper footwear suitable for farm fields.
  • Bring sunscreen and water, but leave pets at home for food‑safety reasons.
  • Pay for what you pick and follow all on‑farm guidance from staff.

And, to keep strawberries fresh as long as possible once you get them home:

  • Keep them dry until serving and wash immediately before.
  • Remove any damaged or moldy berries right away.
  • Store them in a breathable container – shallow bowl lined with paper towel works best.
  • Keep them refrigerated or freeze them for longer-term use.

To find CT Grown farms and pick‑your‑own locations offering strawberries, search “strawberries” on the CT Grown map to locate farms near you. For more information about CT Grown products and seasonal updates, visit ctgrown.org.

The Connecticut Department of Agriculture (CT DoAg) mission is to foster a healthy economic, environmental, and social climate for agriculture by developing, promoting, and regulating agricultural businesses; protecting agricultural and aquacultural resources; enforcing laws pertaining to domestic animals; and promoting an understanding among the state's citizens of the diversity of Connecticut agriculture, its cultural heritage, and its contribution to the state's economy.
